Q1Care’s first Plan for Later Life event, held at the end of January, welcomed over thirty members of the community to The Milestone Centre in Caversham. We are so grateful to everyone who braved the extremely wet weather to join us.

The aim of the evening was two-fold. Firstly to discuss later life and why planning is imperative and secondly to raise funds for Age UK Berkshire.

The event was a great success on both accounts with Mike Allen (Age UK Berkshire) and Rob Crowther (Field Seymour Parkes LLP) presenting a great deal of useful information to the assembled audience (more of that in a moment.) A total of £89 was raised for Age UK Berkshire thanks to our lovely stallholders and to our guests buying raffle tickets. Thank you for your generosity!

Mike Allen is Chief Executive of Age UK Berkshire and he spoke to the audience about why older people are important. He shared some interesting facts and figures:

35% of the UK population is aged over 50
17% of the UK population is aged 65 or more
63% of all informal care is by older people

The number of people aged over 65 and living alone is expected to more than double in the next 100 years Today there are around 6,000 people in Berkshire aged 90-plus. This number is expected to rise to around 18,000 by the year 2033

We are an aging population!

Mike went on to explain the work of Age UK Berkshire, more information can be found at http://www.ageuk.org.uk/berkshire/ and pointed out that “Age UK is for all people in later life” and that the organisation will “work with and inform anyone about older people.” Age UK love later life and want all older people to have a fulfilled, enjoyable and dignified life, free from isolation, poverty, abuse and discrimination.

Rob Crowther is an Associate Solicitor from Field Seymour Parkes and he covered the subject of Lasting Powers of Attorney.

A Power of Attorney allows someone to make decisions on your behalf, should there come a time when you lack mental capacity to do so yourself.

There are two types of LPA. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA covers decisions about the donor’s property and money and a Personal Welfare LPA covers decisions about the donor’s healthcare and personal welfare.

Rob spoke passionately about the importance of having a Lasting Power of Attorney.

We are holding a second Plan for Later Life event when we again welcome Mike and Rob as our speakers on the early evening of March 11th 2014 at The Circle Hospital, Reading. The event will begin at 5pm and finish at 7pm – light refreshments will be available. Please email Melanie.Meads@q1care.co.uk to reserve your place.
